Fame comes in many forms. In Anton Chekhov’s story ‘Joy’, for instance, a young man feels overwhelmed with happiness – he is now famous and ‘all Russia knows of him’. ‘At eleven o'clock on the evening of the 29th of December,’ wrote a newspaper, ‘registration clerk Dmitry Kuldarov, while being very drunk, slipped and fell under a horse.’
